Holly D’Arcy has done more PCS moves than most of us can imagine during her 15 years as a military spouse, including Japan, Hawaii, New Mexico and more. Through each experience, she’s learned exactly what it takes to turn a new duty station into an actual home. She and her family have now planted roots in Destin, Florida where she works in real estate helping other military families navigate that same transition with the kind of local insight you can only get from living it yourself.

I asked Holly to share her honest take on what it is really like to move to Destin as a military family, the parts nobody tells you about in a PCS briefing. Here is what she wants every incoming family to know.

If you’ve only visited Destin on vacation or heard Taylor Swift sing about it, you’re about to discover something most people never see.

Behind the postcard-worthy beaches is a close-knit community where military families put down roots, neighbors know each other, and running into a familiar face at Publix or your kid’s soccer practice is part of everyday life. Destin is one of those rare places where people save all year to spend a week in town, while locals get to enjoy it every day.

As an Air Force spouse since 2012, I’ve learned that every duty station has its own personality. After multiple PCS moves around the world, I’ve found that the hardest part of moving isn’t unpacking boxes. It’s figuring out what your new normal looks like.

Where will we live? Where are my kids going to school? Where’s the nearest Target? Who’s the best doctor? Will we find the right church? What about hair salons? Are there any good gyms? Will I ever find my tribe?

I’ve asked myself every one of those questions with each PCS.

If Destin is your next stop, here’s what I’d want a friend to know before the movers even come to pack up household goods.

Why Military Families Choose Destin, FL

Military families assigned to Hurlburt Field, Eglin Air Force Base, Duke Field, or 7th Special Forces Group have several wonderful communities to choose from. Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, Navarre, Crestview, Shalimar, and others all have their own strengths.

So, why do some families choose Destin?

For many, it’s the balance.

Destin offers the lifestyle people imagine when they picture Florida, while still feeling like a real hometown. During the off-season, you’ll enjoy some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and waterfront dining without the crowds or traffic that come with peak tourist season. During the busy season, you’ll quickly learn the back roads and instinctively know when to leave for an appointment in another town. Before long, you’ll start looking forward to traditions like the Destin Fishing Rodeo, the Destin Seafood Festival, McGuire’s Halloween 5K, and the Destin Christmas Parade along Highway 98.

Although Destin has grown over the years, it still proudly embraces its roots as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” The harbor, local seafood restaurants, fishing tournaments, and waterfront parks all serve as reminders that this community existed long before it became a vacation destination.

One of the things that makes Destin unique is how naturally life revolves around the water. It’s not unusual to meet friends for dinner overlooking the harbor, spend an afternoon on Crab Island, or catch a sunset beach walk after an ordinary Tuesday. The Gulf isn’t reserved for a special occasion. It quietly becomes part of your routine, and something you start to miss anytime it’s been a little too long since your toes were in the sand.

Whether your ideal Saturday is relaxing on the beach, fishing, paddle boarding, golfing, meeting friends for brunch, taking your kids to the park, or simply watching the sunset over the harbor, it’s easy to build a lifestyle that feels both active and unhurried in Destin.

Some military families arrive knowing they’ll only be here for one assignment. Others leave knowing they’d love to come back someday.

Daily Life Looks a Little Different

One of the biggest adjustments for many newcomers is realizing that people here think in minutes, not miles.

A 20- to 40-minute commute to base is completely normal for many. During the summer, Google Maps can be a little optimistic, especially if you’re heading across one of the bridges or toward the beach.

Before long, you’ll probably catch yourself saying, “Let’s leave before the bridge backs up.”

For many military families, crossing the Marler Bridge or the Mid-Bay Bridge at the end of the day becomes part of the rhythm of life. It’s the moment work begins to fade into the background, the salt air rolls in, and you’re reminded why so many families choose to call Destin home. It feels like returning to your own little retreat after a long day.

When choosing where to live, think beyond your commute to base. Consider your drive to work, school, medical appointments, the grocery store, your gym, or the places you’ll spend your weekends. Sometimes a slightly longer drive to work creates a much easier rhythm for everything else.

Healthcare is another adjustment for some families. While Destin has excellent providers nearby, it’s common to drive to Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola, or Panama City for specialty care. Most locals don’t think twice about driving 20 or 30 minutes for the right physician, and many military families use a combination of military and civilian providers.

If you have children, you’ll find no shortage of opportunities for them to grow and stay involved. Families can choose from excellent public schools, specialized academic programs, athletics, arts, and extracurricular activities including soccer, baseball, gymnastics, dance, sailing, martial arts, and music.

If you don’t have children, or they’re not old enough for activities yet, you’ll still find plenty of ways to build friendships through local events, fitness classes, fellowship groups, volunteering, and the many outdoor activities that make life in Destin unique.

One thing you’ll also notice is that many of the people you meet in Destin understand military life. The military community here extends well beyond the installation gates.

There’s More to Destin Than the Beach

Yes, the beaches really are as beautiful as everyone says. But after you’ve lived here for a while, you’ll realize your favorite memories often happen somewhere else in town.

Meeting friends for dinner at some of the region’s favorite restaurants after work…and being able to golf cart there.

Browsing the farmers market year-round on a Saturday morning along the Emerald Coast.

Cheering from the stands at a little league game.

Taking a spontaneous drive to 30A for a girls’ day out.

Clocking out early to spend an hour on the harbor just because you can.

Thursday nights at Mattie Kelly Concerts in the Village.

Before long, you’ll have your favorite beach access points, know whether Henderson Beach or James Lee Park is the better fit for the day, and have an opinion about the best time to take a boat to Crab Island. Those are the little things that make you realize you’re becoming a local. Living in Destin means having easy access to some of the best parts of Northwest Florida while still coming home to a place that feels familiar.

Finding Your People

If I could give one piece of advice to every military family moving here, it would be this: Give yourself grace.

Every PCS comes with a season where everything feels unfamiliar. It takes time to find your church, your gym, your fave coffee shop, your hairstylist, your go-to date night restaurants, and the people who become your tribe.

Say yes when someone invites you to coffee (not always easy for me!). Introduce yourself at a neighborhood event, church, fitness class, volunteer opportunity, or your children’s activities. Those ordinary moments are often where the best friendships begin.

One day you’ll realize you have a “regular” Publix. You’ll know the quickest way around summer traffic, have a favorite beach access, recognize familiar faces around town, and realize you don’t feel like the new family anymore.

That’s when Destin starts feeling like home.

Every military assignment leaves its mark on your family in a different way.
