Before your trip, spend a little time researching where locals actually eat. You’ll discover everything from fresh Gulf seafood and sushi to tacos, barbecue, coffee shops, bakeries, and hidden gems that many visitors never find.

I find that the best family vacation memories come from a single dolphin cruise, a morning paddleboard rental, or an afternoon exploring somewhere new—not from rushing between attractions.

These experiences often feel worlds away from the busy beach scene.

Support Local Makers and Small Businesses

Destin-Fort Walton Beach has a vibrant creative community. From artists and muralists to bakers, makers, photographers, and jewelry designers, there are countless local businesses creating one-of-a-kind products and experiences. Skip the tacky souvenirs and bring home something that is truly unique to the area. 

Look Beyond the Tourist Hot Spots

Some of the area’s best restaurants, coffee shops, and hidden gems aren’t located directly on the water. Venture off the main roads, and you’ll often find the places locals return to again and again.

Bonus Tip: Always Have a Rainy-Day Plan

Even the best beach vacations may encounter a rainy afternoon or a red-flag beach day, but that doesn’t have to ruin your fun!

Before your trip, make a short list of indoor activities your family would enjoy. Think arcades, museums, bowling, shopping districts, indoor play spaces, aquariums, escape rooms, or simply a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant.

Having a backup plan means bad weather doesn’t have to derail your vacation.
