Whether you’ve played it or not, you’ve probably heard of Mahjong. The traditional Chinese game has found a vibrant modern audience, and along the Emerald Coast, it’s become a social phenomenon. From game nights at local restaurants to lessons among friend groups and studios popping up along 30A, it’s clear that Mahjong is more than just a passing trend. The game is tactile, it’s beautiful, and it pulls you away from your phone and into real conversation around a table.

Destin artist Marilu Morgan first learned to play last summer and was immediately hooked. What began as a new hobby eventually inspired her to design her own line of tiles, beach mats, and accessories that celebrate the place she calls home. This isn’t a generic coastal design. Every element was inspired by life on the Emerald Coast, from native Florida Panhandle flowers and local wildlife to a photograph Marilu took of Destin’s iconic emerald water. Locals will appreciate every intricate detail, and visitors can finally pick up a souvenir that will actually get used. It’s something you’ll look at, play with, and think about the next time you’re missing the water.

The Emerald Coast Mahjong Community

For many Mahjong players, it isn’t just the game they enjoy—it’s the community.

“Mahjong brings people together,” Marilu says. “I’ve made new friends and deepened existing friendships through time spent at the Mahjong table.”

She describes the local Mahjong scene as welcoming, vibrant, and growing rapidly. Players gather at restaurants, private homes, lessons, tournaments, and dedicated studios throughout the area, creating connections between both locals and visitors.

Morgan also credits local instructors and businesses for helping the game flourish, including Morgan Smith, Jenn and Jess of Beach Mahj, Mahjong Beach House, and 30A Mahjong Studio.

From Beginner to Mahjong Designer

Marilu learned to play just last summer when a friend invited her to a lesson taught by local American Mahjong instructor Morgan Smith. She was hooked immediately: the weight of the tiles, the visual beauty of different mat and tile combinations, and the rare social experience of sitting around a table with your phones down (except to take a photo of that Mahjong win!).

When she went looking for her own set to buy, she didn’t find what she was picturing.

“A nice tile set is definitely an investment. At that price point, it is not an impulse purchase,” she says. “So I figured if I was going to buy one set, I wanted it to be exactly the one I wanted.”

While many custom mahjong sets feature trendy patterns or bold color palettes, Marilu wanted hers to tell a story about the place she loves most: Destin. She started sketching immediately, spent countless hours researching manufacturing, ordered a sample set, shared it online, and things snowballed from there.

About the Emerald Coast Collection

The Emerald Coast Mahjong collection is not a generic coastal aesthetic applied to a tile set. It is a deeply considered love letter to this specific stretch of the Florida Panhandle, and she carefully crafted every detail and doodle.

The design process was a family affair. She and her husband brainstormed together, and it was actually his idea that the Jokers would all be tourists on the beach. One of those Jokers is fishing with a red snapper on the line, a nod to the local seafood that defines this region’s identity. Every flower in the design is a native species to the Florida Panhandle. The colored layers are inspired by our white sand and emerald waters. And those blue wave tile backs? A photograph Marilu took herself on an ordinary beach day.

Then there are the more personal details woven in. Marilu has grown milkweed in her yard for years, the host plant for monarch butterflies, and so the collection includes both a milkweed plant and a monarch butterfly in the flower designs. A few of the Jokers are, in her words, aspirational: a sunbather, a reader. Two of the kid Jokers are inspired by her own children.

“I truly wanted it to reflect our local community,” she says. “The beach and the bay are definitely the anchors of inspiration. Living in Destin, we are surrounded by water and live amongst all the critters that call it home.”

The Launch Weekend

Marilu isn’t just dropping a link and calling it a day. She planned a full launch weekend with three events where guests can play on the sets before they’re available anywhere else and pick up their own with exclusive preorder pricing before they’re available online. What’s Coming Next

The collection doesn’t stop here. Clear acrylic racks with translucent blue wave pushers are coming in late summer and early fall, along with floating mats featuring the beach print top. And this fall, Marilu will release a Coastal Christmas tile set featuring coastal holiday critters and red snapper scale backs.

“Being able to come up with an idea for something and turn it into a real product has been really fun for me,” she says. “So stay tuned.”
