Stretching from the bay to the Gulf, Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort is a master-planned community on the Florida Panhandle known for its private beach access, walkable layout, and wide range of accommodations. With golf courses, dining, outdoor spaces, and family-friendly activities all located within one connected property, Sandestin is designed for relaxation and convenience. It is made up of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own look and feel. Some areas are tucked along quiet lakes, others sit near the golf course, and some are closer to the Gulf.
Whether you’re planning a family vacation or want a local getaway where you can set your car keys aside, here’s what to know about staying in Sandestin from a local perspective—plus a look at one vacation rental we highly recommend.
Walkability, Tram & Getting Around Sandestin
One of the biggest perks of staying in Sandestin is how easy it is to get around. The resort is designed for exploring on foot, by bike, golf cart, or tram, making it simple to move from one activity to the next without relying on a car. You can walk from the bay to the Gulf without ever leaving the property. The beautifully manicured paths are lined with colorful flowers, mature trees, and scenic views along the way.
Because Sandestin is such a large resort community, walkability can vary based on where you stay, so it’s worth choosing a neighborhood based on what you want to be closest to. If beach access is your top priority, accommodations south of Highway 98 are ideal. If you want easy access to family-friendly activities, dining, and entertainment, neighborhoods closer to The Village of Baytowne Wharf are a great fit. We love that The Gulf House (more about this Sandestin vacation rental below!) is just steps from The Market Shops where you’ll find breakfast restaurants, doughnuts shops, fine dining, local shops and more.
Also, the free Sandestin tram is one of the easiest ways to get around the resort. Running on two continuous loops, the tram departs each stop approximately every 30 minutes and provides access to key areas throughout the property, including the beach, bay, The Village of Baytowne Wharf, golf courses, tennis courts, and the Sandestin Spa & Fitness Center.

Beach Access, Pools & Amenities in Sandestin
Sandestin features private beach access reserved for Sandestin residents and guests. Depending on where you’re staying, the beach may be walkable or a short bike ride away. The resort also offers beach amenities that can be booked in advance, including beach chair rentals with large umbrellas and even sunset bonfires—perfect for families or special occasions. Just keep in mind that it can be pretty busy during peak travel times!
While the Emerald Coast is known for its gorgeous white sand and crystal-clear water, sometimes you may want to switch it up with a pool day. Most neighborhoods in Sandestin offer their own community pool for when you’re done with the sand and waves.

The Village of Baytowne Wharf
One of the biggest attractions that even locals enjoy is The Village of Baytowne Wharf. This outdoor lifestyle center features a variety of shops, restaurants, family-friendly activities, seasonal celebrations and annual events. It feels a little “touristy” but sometimes that’s what you want when traveling, especially with kids! With a playground, adventure zone, arcade, escape room, and more, you’ll never hear your little ones complain of being bored.
Locals love to visit for the seasonal celebrations, like fireworks on the 4th of July or pictures with Santa and ice skating during the holidays. The Village of Baytowne Wharf also hosts several fun events throughout the year including Tequila & Taco Fest, Sandestin Wine Festival, and Baytowne Beer Festival. It’s a lively atmosphere and your kids have plenty of space to run around and burn off that energy!
Grand Boulevard
Grand Boulevard is an upscale shopping, dining, and entertainment destination that is located right outside of Sandestin. You’ll find national retailers, local boutiques, fine dining, casual bites, a movie theater and much more. Enjoy a date night dinner at Vin’tij, pick out a new outfit for your little ones at La Luna Children’s Boutique, or get beach-ready with a swimsuit from Ophelia.
Home to the South Walton Beaches Food & Wine Festival, Grand Boulevard also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. From weekly farmers markets and seasonal sip & shop events, to trick or treating on Halloween and visits with the Easter bunny, it’s always a festive spot. It’s magical during the holiday season, with white Christmas lights, horse-drawn carriage rides, decorated trees and festive events.

The Market Shops
Located right next to the south entrance of Sandestin, The Market Shops has something for everyone to enjoy whether you want to shop, dine, or unwind. If you’re visiting Sandestin in the fall, be sure to check out the popular Bloody Mary Festival! Here are some of our favorite eateries:
- Clean Juice: organic juices, smoothies, acai bowls, wraps, and more healthy items to fuel your beach day!
- Pizza By The Sea: Enjoy a slice at their relaxed, family-friendly restaurant or grab a box to go and have a beachside picnic.
- Parlor Doughnuts: Their famous layered doughnuts come in a variety of flavors, like raspberry pistachio, bourbon caramel, peanut butter cup, and more. Great coffee, too!
- Bijoux: Fine dining and the ideal date night spot! Excellent steaks, drinks, and atmosphere.
- Maple Street Biscuit Company: A fresh, flavorful spin on breakfast comfort food. Their Food Network-famous “Squawking Goat” biscuit sandwich is made with fried chicken, crispy goat cheese and pepper jelly.
- Tuscany Bistro: Amazing Italian food with a great bar and must-have espresso martinis.
