Destin Through a Local’s Eye: Photographer Jamie Kamber

My name is Jamie Kamber and I’m the Editor of Destin Snapshots. Thank you so much for being here!! I’m also a brand and family photographer, so I work with a lot of people who are visiting our coastal community. I found myself constantly sharing recommendations about where to eat, things to do, etc. and could go on for hours about all the amazing things Destin has to offer. I decided to start this hyperlocal blog in order to highlight the businesses, people, and natural beauty that make this city so special. I’m constantly out and about trying new coffee shops, taking my kids to family-friendly events, or just enjoying the stunning beaches (typically with my camera in hand). Below are a few things I always recommend when people ask about Destin.

My Top 10 Destin Recommendations

1. Get out on the water. Whether you go on a dolphin cruise or rent a pontoon boat and spend the day at Crab Island, seeing Destin from the water is such a cool experience! If possible, plan your excursion for high tide—that’s when the water is that gorgeous turquoise color and crystal clear!

2. Dine with a view. Whether it’s on the harbor, bay, or the Gulf, there are a variety of waterfront dining options in Destin. Boshamps is a popular family-friendly spot that offers great food and a fun atmosphere. There is a sandy area by the docks/harbor where kids can run around. Plus their pan roasted Gulf grouper is possibly my favorite dish in all of Destin (it’s served on a feta cheese soufflé with garlic braised spinach, house made tomato jam and citrus butter). Dewey Destin’s on the bay is a casual spot that overlooks Crab Island and serves delicious seafood. For a fancy date night, Marina Cafe is always a great option!

3. Captain Leonard Destin Park. This waterfront park overlooks Crab Island and the bay. It has a beach area, boardwalk, pier, splash pad, picnic pavilions, and a paddle board/kayak launch. It’s great for families with toddlers because you can have a beach experience without big waves. The kids can also enjoy the splash pad and playground or just walk around and explore. We go here a lot!

4. Ice Cream from Pink Coyote Dessert Co. Just a short walk from the park is Pink Coyote Dessert Co. where you can enjoy delicious ice cream at the waterfront picnic tables. With the highest quality ingredients and made-from-scratch mix-ins (like cookie chunks, brownie pieces, berry cobbler filling, etc.), their handcrafted ice cream is possibly the best I’ve ever had. They have a rotating selection of flavors with everything from tried-and-true favorites (but better) to new, unique flavor combinations. If ice cream isn’t your thing, it shares a location with Dewey’s Snoballs.

5. Go to a local coffee shop. I enjoy trying new coffee shops when I travel, so if you also want to support some small businesses while getting your caffeine fix make sure to stop by East Pass Coffee Co., Maas, Beignets & Brew, Causeway Coffee Capriccio Cafe, or 2 Birds just to name a few.

6. Stay at The Henderson. There aren’t many resort-style hotels in Destin, so if you prefer a property with luxury accommodations, pools, spa, beach access, and on-site restaurants, this is the spot to stay. The restaurants, spa, and rooftop bar are open to non-guests as well, so stop by and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere!

7. Take a day trip over to 30A. Scenic Highway 30A is a 24-mile street that parallels the Gulf of Mexico just east of Destin. Along the way you’ll discover a variety of coastal communities, such as Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach and Grayton Beach. Each picturesque town is unique and you’ll discover great restaurants, gorgeous views, local shops, and fun experiences. The best way to see them all is by bike! Rent a cruiser or electric bike and follow the paved trail along 30A.

8. Shop and play at Destin Commons. Whether you want to browse some stores, grab a bite to eat, or let your kids burn off some energy, Destin Commons offers something for everyone in the family. You’ll find a variety of locally owned stores and popular national brands, such as Abercrombie & Fitch, LOFT, H&M, Belk and more. I recommend grabbing an acai bowl or smoothie at Formula Fresh and then letting your kids run around at the playground or jump around in the splash pad. They also host a variety of events throughout the year, such as a monthly market, trick-or-treating, Santa’s arrival, Mac n Cheese festival, and more.

9. See Dolphins. Whether you see them by boat, from the shore, or while standup paddle boarding, seeing dolphins never gets old! It’s incredible to be close enough to see them jump and swim through the water. I highly recommend a jet ski dolphin tour!

10. Check out what events are happening while you’re in town. There are so many festivals in and near Destin. From wine and food festivals to holiday festivities, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
