Staycation at The Henderson Beach Resort in Destin

Henderson Beach Resort in Destin truly has it all: serene spa, Chef-driven dining options, luxurious pools, private beach access and stunning views. Whether you’re planning a family vacation or a romantic getaway, this resort is one of the best places to stay in Destin.

My husband and I recently celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary with a staycation at The Henderson Beach Resort, and even though it’s just a mile from our front door, it felt like a world away. It was the perfect chance to slow down, soak up the beauty of Destin from a different perspective, and enjoy everything The Henderson has to offer. The moment we handed off our keys to the valet and stepped into that gorgeous lobby, we knew we wouldn’t be leaving the resort all weekend. Between the stunning views, relaxing spa time, incredible food, and peaceful beach walks, it truly felt like a getaway.

Room with a (Gulf) View

When we checked into our room, we were greeted with champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, which we enjoyed on the balcony. The view was absolutely gorgeous! From where we sat, we could see the Gulf, the pools below, and all the lush greenery that makes The Henderson feel like its own little oasis. In the mornings, the balcony became my favorite spot for coffee with the quiet pools, a soft pastel sky, and the waves rolling in the distance. The room itself was spacious, spotless, and decorated in those calm coastal tones that instantly make you relax. The king bed was so comfortable and, without the kids, we actually got to sleep in for once!

Lounge, Swim, Repeat: Pool Days Done Right

Obviously people come to Destin for the white sand and emerald water, but when you’re staying at The Henderson, you’ll find yourself torn between the beach and the resort’s incredible pools. There are three in total: two family-friendly options and one that’s adults-only.

The family pools have that perfect vacation vibe with lagoon-style entries, a lazy river, and plenty of room to splash, swim, or just float the day away. This was our first time checking out the newer pool on the north side of the property, and we loved how the lush landscaping makes the lazy river feel like you’re drifting through a tropical hideaway. With floaties for both kids and grown-ups, it’s a fun spot for everyone.

When you’re ready for a bite to eat or a frozen cocktail, both pool areas have a poolside bar and grill serving up lunch, snacks, and even popsicles (including locally made Swell Pops, a Destin favorite). We ordered the fish tacos, a shrimp quesadilla, and a piña colada right from our lounge chairs, and honestly, it doesn’t get much better than that. Between the sunshine, good food, and laid-back vibe, we could have easily spent the entire day poolside.

If you’re craving a quieter escape, the adults-only pool is pure bliss. It’s calm, serene, and the perfect spot to unwind with a good book or a cocktail in hand. Usually our kids are with us when we visit The Henderson, so this was the first time we truly got to soak in how peaceful this pool is. We spent the afternoon relaxing on our lounge chairs, taking leisurely dips in the water, and actually finishing conversations without having to keep an eye on the kids. It felt like such a treat.

And don’t think the pools are just for daytime fun. As the sun sets, tiki torches flicker to life and the whole pool area transforms into a softly lit, tranquil oasis. Whether you’re in the water, lounging nearby, or just passing through on your way to dinner or the beach, the atmosphere feels calm and inviting. One evening as we were walking back from dinner, the pool deck was buzzing with people gathered around the bar watching football on the TVs.

Private Beach Access

Even though we spent most of our time by the pools, we couldn’t resist an afternoon at the beach (I mean look how calm and clear that water was!). One of the best perks of staying at The Henderson is the private beach access, which is just a short walk away. You simply stroll past the pool to the gated entrance beside Henderson Park Inn, where a breezy boardwalk opens up to those classic Destin views. The resort offers beach chairs and umbrellas for rent, and their setup service makes it completely effortless. No need to haul all your own gear.

We also loved visiting the beach at night, which was a treat since we never seem to do that at home. One night after dinner (and way too much food—more on that next!), we decided to walk it off and ended up in a couple of rocking chairs by the water. We sat there for awhile, listening to the waves and watching the stars. It was such a simple, relaxing way to end the night.

Coastal Cuisine and Craft Cocktails

During our stay at The Henderson, we enjoyed every meal on property and they were all incredible. With everything from fresh Gulf seafood and flavorful sushi to grab-and-go bites and poolside snacks, there’s something for every mood and appetite. Each meal felt like a special occasion, whether I was dressed up for a beachfront dinner or sipping on a cocktail poolside.

Primrose Coastal Italian

This elegant spot serves up fresh seafood alongside house-made pastas, bright Mediterranean flavors, and a thoughtfully curated wine list. Executive Chef Scott Plumley has crafted a menu full of standout dishes, like Jumbo Lump Crabcakes (pictured above), Gulf Grouper, Prime Ribeye, and my personal favorite, Gnocchi al Pesto con Copesante (hand-rolled potato gnocchi with seared diver scallops, basil pesto, and marinated heirloom tomatoes). And definitely save room for dessert! If you’re a chocolate fan like me, you’ll be dreaming about the Flourless Chocolate Torte long after your meal is over. It’s topped with pistachios, ganache and hazelnut ice cream for a rich, sweet treat.

Horizons Bar

For a more laid-back bite or drink, Horizons offers elevated bar fare and creative craft cocktails. My husband and I swung by for lunch and loved the fish tacos, pizza, and crispy cauliflower (seriously, even non-veggie fans will be wanting more of this app). I’m also a fan of their Classic Club and the Henderson Burger. With a few TVs above the bar, we were able to catch some football while we ate.

The Rooftop

With Gulf views, great sushi, and creative cocktails, The Rooftop at The Henderson has it all. Its modern, lively vibe makes it perfect for a pre-dinner drink or a special night out. One evening, we stopped by for cocktails and sushi, and it definitely delivered. Cozy seating and sweeping views of the Gulf and Henderson Beach State Park make it a great spot to relax and watch the sunset.

We couldn’t get enough of the Crab Dip (so meaty!) and the Yellowish Jalapeño appetizer. For sushi, the Dragon Roll and Super Crunch Roll are standouts, though everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. And the cocktails? Endless Summer and Keen Blue Angels are dangerously good. Even when we aren’t staying at the resort, this is one of our favorite spots for an evening out.

Beach Walk Café

For a truly memorable meal with breathtaking water views, Beach Walk Cafe is hard to beat. Just a short stroll away at Henderson Park Inn, this fine dining establishment takes Southern seafood classics to the next level with dishes like Snapper, Shrimp & Grits, and Grouper Vince. My husband also raved about his perfectly cooked Certified Black Angus Filet. We loved dining outside on the charming patio and saw a stunning sunset!

Relax and Rejuvenate at The Spa

Last, but certainly not least, is the Henderson Spa! This serene space boasts a luxurious Lavender Lounge, Himalayan Salt Suite, steam room, spa pool, plush robes, and a complimentary glass of champagne. Whether you’re in the mood for a massage, facial, or one of their signature treatments, indulging in a spa experience here is a must. I enjoyed the Henderson Dreams package, which included a mineral salt scrub with eucalyptus, a full body massage enhanced with warm mineral stones and an invigorating foot massage while cocooned in a soothing wrap. It was so relaxing and my skin was super smooth and soft after.

A Staycation to Remember

Our stay at The Henderson felt like a true escape. From the beautiful beach day and sparkling pools to the indulgent spa treatments and exceptional dining, every moment was a blend of relaxation and luxury. It was so special to celebrate our 10th anniversary and it reminded us that you don’t always need to travel far to feel completely pampered and refreshed. This staycation gave us all the joys of a lavish getaway, right in our own backyard.
