One of the best-kept secrets about Destin? Visiting during the off season. Before spring break and summer crowds roll in, Destin feels slower, calmer, and more local. Cooler temperatures, fewer lines, and easy parking make it the perfect time to explore at your own pace. Whether you want to linger over breakfast, stroll along the harbor, or take a spontaneous drive down 30A, here are some of the best things to do in Destin during the off season.
Spend the Day on 30A
The off season is hands-down the best time to explore 30A. With lighter traffic and fewer crowds, you can easily hop between coastal communities like Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Grayton Beach. Rent bikes, browse local shops, grab coffee or lunch, and actually enjoy the beach without fighting for space. It’s the perfect day trip when you want a change of scenery while keeping that relaxed coastal vibe.
Breakfast at The Donut Hole
A Destin classic for a reason, The Donut Hole almost always has a line out the door during the busy season, so take advantage while things are quieter. Whether you’re craving a hearty breakfast or one of their famous donuts, this diner-style restaurant is great for a laid-back start to your day. Pro tip: breakfast is served all day, so you could also mix things up and enjoy this morning favorites for dinner.
Dinner at Boshamps
If you’ve ever tried to get a table at Boshamps in the summer, you already know—waits can easily stretch to three hours. During the off season, you can enjoy fresh Gulf seafood, Southern-inspired dishes, and waterfront views without the chaos. It’s the perfect setting for golden-hour dinners, watching boats cruise by, and soaking in a stunning sunset. Visiting with kids? The sandy beach is the perfect spot for them to run around and burn off some energy! Don’t skip the pan-roasted grouper, it might be my favorite dish in Destin.
Stroll Along Norriego Point
Located at the end of Holiday Isle, Norriego Point is one of Destin’s most scenic spots. With limited parking, it can be nearly impossible to visit during the summer, so these cooler, quieter months are a great time to experience it. Take a peaceful walk along the sand, watch boats pass through East Pass, or enjoy a quiet sunset with unobstructed views. The park recently got an update and now features a brand-new boardwalk and bathroom facilities. If you do visit when the water is warmer, one of my favorite things to do in Destin is explore the tide pools and swim!
Go on a Hike
The off season in Destin is one of the best times to get outside and enjoy nature on foot. Whether it’s a short, easy walk along the nature trail at Henderson Beach State Park or a longer adventure through the trails at Point Washington or Topsail Hill Preserve, cooler temperatures make hiking far more enjoyable. It’s the perfect chance to soak in the coastal scenery, spot wildlife, and enjoy these trails before the summer heat and humidity set in.
If you’re looking to experience Destin at a slower pace, the off season is the time to do it. With fewer crowds, cooler weather, and easier access to your favorite spots, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy Destin like a local. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or live nearby, these quieter months offer some of the best moments on the Emerald Coast.
